Growing up in south Florida, afternoon rain showers was a normal thing. With the rains came lightning and if you weren't careful you could easily be struck down. On so many occasions you would hear of folks being struck by lightning at the beach, golf course or out playing ball.

Here in Tuscaloosa we face similar afternoon storms that produce dangerous lightning as a result precaution should be heeded. Lightning strikes kill at least 50 people a year, I never would have thought that. Also hundreds are injured, and rank in the top 10 in insurance claims in the country.

How do you avoid being a victim? Pay attention to weather reports, stay inside when the threat of storms approach, when you hear thunder, stay inside,  also get yourself a weather app for your phone.
