Tuscaloosa City Hall is now tobacco-free. But it’s not just the downtown facility. All buildings and properties under the jurisdiction of the city of Tuscaloosa went tobacco-less on Friday.
The usage ban includes cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco, meaning no use of any tobacco product will be allowed inside buildings or on most properties, facilities, grounds and parking areas owned, rented or leased by the city.

Smoking only will be allowed in the designated smoking areas within the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater and in public parks owned by the city of Tuscaloosa.

This move comes from an executive order issued by Mayor Walter Maddox on July 8.

The health and well-being of our staff, visitors and contractors are of highest priority for the city of Tuscaloosa,” the document said. “It has been continuously proven that smoking and using other tobacco products are not good for the user’s health and affects the health of those close by through second-hand smoke and residual contaminations.

The new policy is meant to protect people from the dangers of second-hand smoke, promote a healthier environment and reduce littering.
