Remember when Rosie O'Donnell came out as gay and we all thought, "Who didn't know that?" Well, another "star" came out this week, and it's not really the most surprising thing ever.

Waylan Smithers Jr., assistant to Mr. Burns on "The Simpsons" (YES! the cartoon), came out Sunday night, expressing his love for his boss. While this episode is said to have been inspired by the writer's relationship with his own gay son, was it really necessary?

This question does not come as a result of the character's preference but is one of concern for society as a whole. Why is it that we place so much emphasis on sexuality? There are so many other issues plaguing our nation: hunger, an increasing gap between the rich and the poor, government spending, violent crime rate increases, etc.

That's not to say that we should return to the days of "I Love Lucy" when married couples weren't even shown getting into the same bed, but why is it of so much interest to us with whom someone decides to lay, especially in cases of people we don't even know such as celebrities or cartoon characters? (How crazy is THAT?) Even though Lucy and Ricky obviously shared the same bed at some point, as they had a son, their sexuality wasn't constantly highlighted. The show focused instead on her wild antics and mishaps.

Do we really care that much about sexuality for a person's coming out to be major breaking news, even when it's a cartoon character? If so, what we deem as entertaining has reach an all new low.
