Every Oscar night has its fair share of dramatic and moving moments, but nothing ever comes close to the "In Memoriam" segment, which honors the actors, actresses, writers, directors, producers and technicians who passed away in the past year. Just when you think you've gotten over the death of a talent who truly mattered to you, this portion of the show rears its head and tears your heart open all over again.
'Noah' is less than a month away from hitting theaters and we still have no idea what to make of this thing. On one hand, almost every trailer has looked like a complete and total mess. On the other hand, this is the latest effort from Darren Aronofsky, a filmmaker whose incredible previous work has earned him the benefit of the doubt here. The latest material from the film only adds to our bafflement -- two new character posters solidify our worst fears, but the cover of the graphic novel adaptation of the film gets us interested all over again.
There are good days, there are bad days, and then there are days when you confuse Samuel L. Jackson with Laurence Fishburne and find yourself at the mercy of an actor whose voice can make even the strongest man whimper in terror. This sounds like a joke, but it actually happened on live television, and since this is the internet, it will never go away and the news anchor who made the tragic error will never live it down.
Race and comedy don't always mix, but with Black History Month upon us, 'SNL' decided to take no prisoners and create a music video that has the potential to be one of the most offensive things the show has ever done. It's a credit to the writers and to performers Keenan Thompson, Jay Pharoah and Sasheer Zamata that this thing works and that it's as funny as it is.
In the weeks following the tragic death of Paul Walker, Universal and the crew of 'Fast and Furious 7' have been forced to drastically course correct the direction of the blockbuster franchise. With little time to mourn and countless jobs and dollars on the line, sources reveal director James Wan, writer Chris Morgan and executive Jeffrey Kirschenbaum will gracefully "retire" Walker's Brian O'Conner from the series using footage already shot for the film.
If there's one thing that we're reminded of a few times a year here at the Weekend Box Office Report, it's that films targeted at black audiences are always ignored by many mainstream movie websites ... until they open huge at the box office. 'The Best Man Holiday' is the latest film to prove that there's an entire group of moviegoers who aren't being given the films they obviously want to see, and hopefully its success will spur Hollywood into action, allowing for the production of more movies with black casts and filmmakers. Maybe. This is Hollywood, after all.
After years of struggling against the odds and barely surviving in a rapidly changing world, Blockbuster announced that it's officially set to close the remainder of its US stores. For some, this is a day or mourning. For others, a day of celebration. For all of us, it's just a reminder that the way we consume media has changed so drastically and so quickly that the thought of Blockbuster going out of business would have been unthinkable a decade ago.
After months of boycott talk and constant controversy, the long in the works adaptation of Orson Scott Card's 'Ender's Game' opened at number one at the box office with decent but not spectacular numbers. It's a long road to profitability, but hey, this is a start.
Recently, 'SNL' came under fire for not having any black actresses in the show's line-up, a controversy that was only further flamed when veteran cast member Kenan Thompson said that most black comediennes "weren't ready" for the gig. The show could have just ignored all of this and everything would have just vanished under the carpet, but to the cast and crew's credit, they confronted the issue in the cold open for this week's episode, apologizing while making fun of the entire situation.
For the third weekend in a row, 'Gravity' dominated the box office, taking no prisoners in its quest to become one of 2013's most deserving blockbusters. However, its tremendous success has been at the expense of a handful of other films, which have been crushed in Alfonso Cuaron's titanic wake.
