Anyone who's lived in Tuscaloosa a significant amount of time knows that while the cost of living is relatively low compared to other areas across the nation, it is high in comparison to surrounding areas. A decent 2-bedroom apartment often rents for more than many pay for mortgages. However, there are resources available that ease the financial burden. The following are tips on how to ball on a budget in Tuscaloosa.

1.  Take advantage of free events.  The city puts on various events all year that have no cover charge. Attend them!  If they're in open areas such as Government Plaza or River Walk, pack a lunch/snack and return to the simple life when people enjoyed picnics.

2.  Think outside the box.  This is a college town.  What does that mean? There are services that can be performed at significantly lower prices by close-to-graduating students. For instance, Shelton State has both cosmetology and nail tech programs.  They also have a salon and nail shop where services are provided. Massaged Life and Wellness Academy near the Tuscaloosa VA also offers student-performed massages. (I got one earlier this week, and it was FABULOUS!)

3.  Consignment/thrift shop and refurbish.  Because some people feel the need to upgrade every so often, a lot of great things are donated for charitable organizations to sell at huge discounts.  They may be slightly blemished but not too bad. In addition, consignment shops usually sell barely worn clothing (especially formal gowns) for much less than you'd pay at a major retailer.

Now, these are just basic tips but they're often overlooked or forgotten.  There are numerous resources available and programs that exist for the sole purpose of increasing the quality of life for area residents, and I'm not talking about federally funded assistance programs.  Need home repairs and have the time?  The Ollie Washington Building and Maintenance Program will make your repairs for free as long as you buy the materials!

So, pay your bills first.  Keep that roof over your head and transportation. For everything else, learn to ball within your budget.
