You know when you think about comic books you think about Batman, Spiderman, Superman, Supergirl, Wonder Woman and the flash to name a few.

Very seldom do you hear a conversation about black characters in comic books. During Black History Month you will hear about inventors, great scholars, and African American first.

Well today I’m talking about DC Comics first Black Superhero!

DC Comics first mainstream black hero was Black Lightning! Black Lightning made his debut in 1977 in Black lightning #1. Black Lightning was created by Trevor von Eeden and Tony Isabella.

Originally a high school principal Black Lightning was a skilled martial artist and Olympic-level athlete whose mission was to take down organized crime in Metropolis’ Suicide Slum. Black Lightning for years was a member of Batman’s team of Outsiders. He was also a member of the Justice League.

He had two daughters who were also superheroes Thunder and Lightning.
