Former Alabama quarterback Blake Sims arrived at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine this week hoping to prove his value as a signal-caller at the next level, but he'll likely have to shine in workouts after measuring under six feet tall.

More than 300 players will have their height and weight measured before going drills this weekend in Indianapolis. Quarterbacks went through the process on Thursday, which is where Sims officially checked in a 5'11" and 218 pounds, making him the lone man at his position to miss six feet.

With NFL offensive linemen standing an average of 6'5" tall, NFL front office personnel has traditionally avoided quarterbacks that don't measure up. But that's changed in recent years. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson overcame his 5'10" stature to lead the Seahawks to two consecutive Super Bowls, winning one. A year ago, Johnny Manziel missed the six foot mark but still got drafted in the first round.

Then you have Drew Brees, who has compiled one of the greatest NFL careers at quarterback despite being right at six feet. He's proven time and time again that shorter players can still succeed.

Sims won't have a long track record of collegiate success to help him overcome the odds. He'll have to use the big stage this weekend to impress coaches and scouts enough that they give him a shot this fall.

But the Crimson Tide's single-season passing leader has proven doubters wrong once before. This time one year ago, very few people thought he had the ability to lead Alabama, but he broke records on his way to an SEC Championship and a College Football Playoff appearance.
