On Monday night, outspoken ESPN SportsCenter cohost Jemele Hill called Donald Trump a white supremacist and bigot who emboldens other white supremacists. She also said he’s unqualified to be president.

While it was difficult to find the lie in Hill’s comments, particularly after Trump’s infuriating response to neo-Nazi terrorism in Charlottesville, in which he blamed “both sides” for the terrorist act, ESPN didn’t think so.

In fact, the network issued an apology for Hill’s tweets yesterday, and “addressed” it with her, saying she recognizes her “actions were inappropriate.”

Of course, it took minutes for the sports network to receive a barrage of criticism for issuing the statement, particularly because Hill’s comments were based in truth. A truth that was deeply explored in a standout piece, “The First White President” by journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates for The Atlantic, days before Hill’s comments.

ESPN’s statement has largely been seen as the network pandering to its white, right wing base, an idea that folks on Twitter didn’t mince words expressing. Charlamagne Tha God, Gabrielle Union, Reggie Miller and Colin Kaepernick were among those who stood with Jemele.

Take a look at some of the responses below.
