‘Coco’ Trailer: A Boy, a Dog, a Whole Bunch of Skeletons, and One Technicolor Flying Jaguar

Disney and Pixar’s new film Coco is the studio partnership’s first major foray into the mythologies and culture of Mexico, and the newest trailer for it looks absolutely gorgeous.

This new trailer is the lengthiest one yet, and it provides more exposition for what we’ll see in the movie. Miguel, frustrated by his family’s ban on music, wants to remind them all of their famous musician ancestor, and in his eagerness to do so accidentally journeys to the Land of the Dead. He only has a limited amount of time before he needs to get back to the world of the living, and he learns that remembrance of the dead is crucial to their survival beyond this life: once everyone on the surface forgets about you, you vanish forever. It’s a beautiful belief that brings to mind that quote oft-attributed to (sigh) Banksy: “They say you die twice. Once when you stop breathing and the second, a bit later on, when somebody mentions your name for the last time.”

Coco is the first major Disney production with an entirely Latino voice cast, their latest in a conscious effort to explore new cultures with their films, from The Princess and the Frog to Big Hero 6 to last year’s Moana. Coco will explore the teachings of the Mexican Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) and also introduce us to what looks like a technicolor Maya jaguar god? Sign me right up.

Here’s Coco’s official synopsis:

Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, young Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. After meeting a charming trickster named Hector (Gael García Bernal), the two new friends embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.

Coco hits theaters November 22.
