Common's father, Lonnie Lynn, recognized for his commentary and poetry on many of his son's albums, has passed away at age 71.

The rapper revealed the news during an interview on Monday (Sept. 15) in Los Angeles, according to the Associated Press. Lynn died on Sept. 12.

In a recent interview, Common spoke highly of his dad, saying he always provoked thought. "He was truly a natural poet and master of words," the 'Nobody's Smiling' creator shared. The way he said things made me look at life and the world in a new way, in a different way. They always sparked a thought in my head. His words would always make me strive to achieve higher, to write better, to me more truthful with my words."

Lynn is a Chicago hoops legend, particularly on the playground. He played in the American Basketball Association during the 1969-1970 season.

Common didn't provide any further details about his father's passing.
