All over the country, controversy over trans-restroom use continues. Many feel like allowing one to use the restroom which correlates to his or her gender jeopardizes the safety of women and children. What isn't clearly understood is why it's so hard to find a compromise.

When the issue first came up, my first thought was, "What restroom do people think transgender people have been using?" A person who feels like a woman enough to dress as one and essentially live as one is doing just that.... LIVING AS A WOMAN! This person undoubtedly uses the women's restroom. Of course, the conversation goes deeper than that, but here are other observations I've considered.

Over the years, I've gone to a number of outdoor events, many of which had no indoor restrooms. However, they had a line of portable restrooms. Some of these have sinks where you can wash your hands; others don't. Men and women alike use these. When one person comes out, the next one goes in with no regard for who else is walking in or out.

Two weeks ago while shopping, my daughter had to use the restroom. We went to the restroom only to discover that the women's restroom was closed. There was a sign on the bathroom door saying to use the men's restroom. At the men's restroom, it said to lock the door once you enter to prevent others from coming in. This was their way of having a restroom available to customers while maintaining the comfort of the sexes.
Then, just this past Sunday, we were in a store and my daughter had to use the bathroom. (Those who knew me as a child know that I'm just getting back everything I put my mom through. I drank plenty of fluids and stayed using the restroom wherever we went.) The store we were in had a men's restroom as well as a women's restroom. Guess which one was locked.

I FIRST asked for the key. The employee passed the buck to another, and that one was too busy to let me in. So, I did what any caring mother would do and went into the men's room.
First of all, let me say that men are totally disgusting. There is NO REASON a toilet, should smell like pee! If you shoot it into the water and flush, it takes a good bit of time before smelling. However, I digress.

We went into the restroom, locked the door, and I held my daughter above the toilet to use it. After washing our hands, we hurried out of the store.

At Archibald and Woodrow's, for instance, there are three ladies rooms on one side of the building. These are not stalls. Each of them have their own toilets, sinks, and doors. So, the "politically correct" thing to do would be to do away with stalled restrooms. Make each restroom have a door that can be locked. That way, there is no issue with who goes at the same time as another.
