Officials with the Birmingham Zoo have confirmed that a child was bitten by a wild copperhead snake on Thursday. The condition of the child is unknown.

WNCN reports the child was bitten around noon near the 'Trails of Africa' exhibit but officials said the snake was not part of their collection of animals. Staff contained and relocated the venomous snake.

The statement reported that officials are working with the hospital to determine the appropriate protocol for the child.
