Yes, it’s a big weekend in West Alabama.  In addition to Pickens County being LIT for Aliceville’s Homecoming, hundreds of vehicles will go just across the county line on Saturday for Panola Day!

What exactly is Panola Day?

According to the Panola Day Committee President, Callie Moss, the annual event began as the homecoming for North Sumter Jr. High. However, the school closed because of low numbers.   Those in the community didn’t want to see the annual gathering disappear. So, they a committee was formed to plan this year’s event, which is said to be the first official Panola Day.

People come from miles around to take part in the parade, which begins at 12:00pm.  The parade will go on in remembrance of North Sumter Jr. High, Home of Wolverines. It will feature floats, bands, and more.  Homecoming queens from 1999-2018 were asked to participate, and at least 15 have confirmed that they’d be in attendance.

The slogan for Panola Day 2018 is Moving Forward, Embracing our Community.  A banner with slogan has been placed in town; and those who purchased t-shirts for Panola Day are invited to take part in a photo shoot at 9:00am at the site of the banner.

In addition to the parade, this year’s event will Honor Coach Steve Binion and Keon Little. Panola Day participants and spectators alike are encouraged to visit vendors for some of the best food in the state of Alabama as well as stick around for a gospel extravaganza, which will begin at 2:00.
