DMX to Fight George Zimmerman in Celebrity Boxing Match
Domenick Nati, a rep for DMX, says that the rapper has not signed any paperwork regarding the boxing match yet. The fight is not confirmed until he does so. “The boxing match between George Zimmerman and DMX is not officially confirmed. DMX has promised to ‘beat his ass,’ but no contract or paperwork has been signed or agreed to yet. DMX will release an official statement if and when an agreement is made,” Nati released in a statement.
George Zimmerman isn’t hiding from the negative public attention in the wake of Trayvon Martin’s death and is instead deciding to take advantage of it. He’s been looking for an opponent for an upcoming celebrity boxing match, and while Kanye West was his choice, DMX has come forward to face off against him.
TMZ reports he chose X amongst 15,000 applicants. The rapper gave Zimmerman’s search for an opponent some extra attention when he detailed what he’d do if ever given a chance to fight him. “I would not be boxing for me … I’d be boxing for the legacy of Trayvon Martin and his family,” DMX said. “I am going to beat the living f— out him … I am breaking every rule in boxing to make sure I f— him right up.”
Twitter was in an uproar right after the news hit. Zimmerman probably won’t have too much of a problem with a majority of the negative responses, since the boxing match is essentially a publicity stunt. What may sadly be slipping under the radar is that Trayvon Martin would’ve turned 19 today (Feb. 5).
A petition has been set up in hopes of stopping the fight. The target is Damon Feldman, the person who’s promoting the fight. He’s had a history of using shortcuts to get boxing licenses for his fighters, which can potentially put lives at risk. The petition that’s addressed to the Obama Administration also decries the fight for using racial tensions for profit.
The date and location of the DMX vs. Zimmerman fight will be announced at a press conference Feb. 12.
