Eddie Murphy surprised fans in September when he released his reggae jam 'Red Light' featuring Snoop Lion. Some wondered if the actor-comedian was set on reviving a singing career after a 20-year hiatus. Apparently, he's serious. Murphy just released his second single, 'Promise (You Won’t Break My Heart).'

'Promise' is an acoustic guitar-driven ballad with the banal, repeated words of "promise you won’t break my heart."

"Promise you won’t break my heart / 'Cause my heart has been broken a million times before / Think I can’t take no more / I was sad and lonely / I was so low," Murphy sings.

While 'Promise' reminds us of Babyface’s classic ballad 'When Can I See You Again,' Murphy’s yearning vocals are not that pleasurable.

According to a press release (via EURweb), Murphy is hard at work on his full-length studio effort, '9,' due next year. The collection will encompass a "wealth of influences that zips across a wide variety of music genres, making '9' a seamless album filled with fearless creativity and innovation," the statement reads.

'Promise' is currently impacting radio and will be available via iTunes on Dec. 3.

While 'Promise’ sounds promising, we're eager to hear more of Eddie Murphy’s "creativity and innovation" next year.
