Empire star Bryshere Y. Gray has been cast to star in the upcoming New Edition biopic for BET. The young actor will play Michael Bivins in the movie.

According to a press release from Viacom, the three-part miniseries, directed by Chris Robinson, will follow the legendary R&B group from their humble days as children in Boston all the way up to superstardom in the 1980's. The drama will also touch on the highs and lows of the iconic group.

Along with Gray, actor Elijah Kelley will play Ricky Bell; Grammy-nominated singer Luke James will portray Johnny Gill; Straight Outta Compton star Keith Powers will play Ronnie DeVoe and actors Algee Smith and Woody McClain will play Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown, respectively.

Production on the on the project will begin in May in Los Angeles. Although they are filming the project next month, fans will have to wait until 2017 to watch New Edition: The Movie on BET.
