Eric Garner’s Family Releases Anti-Police Brutality Song ‘I Can’t Breathe’

In the wake of shooting deaths this past week, Eric Garner’s family released an anti-police brutality song called “I Can’t Breathe.”

Garner, who was a husband and a father of six children, was killed when New York police officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold in Staten Island in 2014. The encounter was filmed and in the video you can hear, Garner said “I can’t breathe” to police officers at least 11 times. A few months later, a Staten Island grand jury decline to bring charges against Pantaleo for putting Garner in the fatal chokehold. NYC would later reach a $5.9 million settlement with the Eric Garner estate.

On the inspirational track, Garner’s sister, Ellisha Flagg, sings encouraging words of hope, while his brother, Steven Flagg, delivers a verse honoring his now deceased family member.

"If I lose my car, I can get another one / Lose my house, I can get another one / Lose my mind, I create another one / They took my brother and I can never get another one / I’m tired of a system that will never love me / A system that took my brother from me / No matter how much money I receive, I can hear my brother crying ‘I can’t breathe,'" raps Steven.

Eric Garner Family’s song comes at a time when America is still reeling from the tragic shooting deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and five Dallas police officers during a Black Lives Matter rally in Dallas, Texas.

"I Can't Breathe" is currently streaming on SoundCloud and can be purchase via Apple Music and iTunes. The song will be available at all digital music outlets on July 16.
