It's April and thousands of Alabamians will have their food stamps benefits cut off. This isn't something that's just happening, it has been on going since the expiration of a federal waiver that allowed some states – including Alabama – to grant exemptions to work requirements for a segment of SNAP recipients.

As of Jan.1 all able bodied persons between 18 and 49 that receive benefits and who aren't disabled or raising minor children are required to work at least part time to continue getting food stamps.

Those exempt from the new regulations are those that are in an alcohol/drug treatment program, a student in school or training program, those who are physically or mentally unable to work, those that are pregnant, or with responsibility for a dependent child under age 18.

Due to the high unemployment rate, the work requirement is not in effect for Greene, Hale, Perry, Dallas, Lowndes, Wilcox, Monroe, Conecuh, Clarke, Washington, Choctaw, Sumter, and Barbour counties.
