A newly introduced bill is said to prevent those receiving food stamps from owning a vehicle, but that is said to have been only a rumor. Food stamp recipients in Alabama already  may have to work to not lose their benefits under new guidelines.

The USDA lists the guidelines of the program which includes asset limitations, including the price if your car, but provides for exceptions, including if the vehicle is used to travel to work or transport a physically disabled family member.

The bill also states:

This bill would require the Department of
Human Resources to terminate benefits for any recipient of SNAP benefits upon a determination that the recipient has failed to cooperate with child support enforcement requirements or the Child Support Enforcement Division of the department
without good cause, or is delinquent on any
court-ordered support payments, including arrears.

The bill is just the latest in an effort to control the number of people receiving benefits.

Also it is hoped to be encouraging able-bodied recipients who receive benefits to become more self-sufficient and depend less on aid from the government.
