July 23 is National Hot Dog Day. Depending on where you are, hot dogs can look and taste completely different. From slaw dogs in the South to Chicago dogs in the Mid-West to Detroit's Coney dogs, cities take their hot dogs very seriously.

As for toppings, whether ketchup and mustard, chili or sauerkraut, hot dogs handle them all. The city of Frankfurt, Germany, believes that the hot dog was first created there in 1487. These "frankfurters" were the likely ancestors to our modern snack.

In 1893, the sausage became a staple for vendors at American stadiums, after it was introduced by Chris Von de Ahe, a German immigrant who owned the St. Louis Browns baseball team.

The origin of the sandwich's name remains shrouded in mystery. Some say early vendors brought their dachshunds along, lending the moniker to the meat.

Others claim a German immigrant named Tad Dorgan didn't know how to spell dachshund, so he wrote hot dog instead.

Regardless of how it came to be, one thing is for certain; this sandwich — and yes, it is a sandwich — is here to stay. Enjoy the holiday, and plan on a hot dog for lunch. Try this recipe for homemade slaw to top your dog:

2cups shredded cabbage
