Should anything happen to you in Jackson, Miss., you just might not want responders to rush you to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, as the facility has received an F on a national patient safety report card.

The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit hospital watchdog, runs the Hospital Safety Score, where grades are based on a number of categories looking at surgeries, infections, staffing levels, and other criteria. UMMC was Mississippi's only hospital to receive an F rating; and chief medical officer Dr. Michael Henderson says he plans to implement a new safety program and will standardize some procedures, according to The Clarion-Ledger.

Hospital authorities defend its reputation, saying the report is very misleading and that although they may perform poorer than average by comparison, they aren't failing. However, when the areas where improvements are planned include lung collapsing, surgical wounds splitting open, accidental clots and tears and death from treatable serious complications.... Kinda sounds like "F" material to me.
