Summer is on the way, and you know what that means: Cool treats will be a hot commodity! While ice cream and smoothie shops will always be in demand, let's not deprive today's children of the things we all enjoyed when we were their age: Homemade treats!

Many people have their favorites, but one seems to have a common consensus: Icy cups/beebops. Here are my top 3.

My 3 favorite spring/summer treats:

  1. Icy cups/beebops- Depending on where you're from, these go by different names, but they're the same thing, Koolaid or some form of juice poured into a styrofoam cup and frozen. Some people add a little extra sugar, and some go the advanced route and pour a little, let it freeze, and add another flavor to be frozen before even another layer is added.  Call it what you want but allowing kids to make these beats any popsicle you can buy. (Don't forget to write the name on the cup before pouring if working with more than one child.) Of course, a popsicle stick may be added as soon as the surface is semi-frozen, but most commonly, the styrofoam cup is simply torn off as the treat is devoured around the edges first. For those who want to be a bit more civilized, a spoon is used. But really, where's the fun in that?
  2. Homemade ice cream- Some store brands have gotten pretty close to mimicking the goodness of homemade vanilla ice cream, but to actually make it at home is the best ice cream you could ever eat. (This is one of the things about my late grandmother that I miss most. She loved making ice cream and other treats for us.)
  3. Frozen grapes- I'm not sure where my mom got the idea, but she would purchase grapes, wash them and remove them from their stems, and then she'd place them in the freezer. Once frozen, they were the best treats ever. It was kinda like eating ice cubes with a twist. It was the same coolness but once it "melted," we had cold grapes.

These are just some of the treats I remember from my childhood that I haven't seen in years! I think I'll introduce my daughter to them this summer. Do you have any "old school" favorites or recipes you'd like to share? If so, put them in the comments. Don't forget to share this article.
