The legendary character actress Jean Stapleton has passed away.

Stapleton passed away from natural causes in her home in New York City on Friday (May 31), surrounded by friends and family. She was 90 years old.

The ‘All in the Family’ actress had a long and illustrious career, most notably for her role as Edith Bunker, the sweet counterpart to Archie’s angry bigot.

Stapleton also starred in the 1982 TV movie ‘Eleanor, First Lady of the World,’ in which she played Eleanor Roosevelt — and for which she received an Emmy nomination. (She also earned a nod for a guest appearance on ‘Grace Under Fire’ in 1995.)

The storied star began her career in 1941 as a stock player in New England before moving to Broadway in the 1950s. In 1964, Stapleton originated the role of Mrs. Strakosh in ‘Funny Girl’ with Barbra Streisand.

“I wasn’t a leading lady type,” Stapleton previously told the Associated Press (via USA Today). “I knew where I belonged. And actually, I found character work much more interesting than leading ladies.”

Stapleton was married to William Putch for 26 years until his death in 1983. She is survived by her two children with Putch, John and Pamela.

Our thoughts are with Stapleton’s loved ones at this time. She will certainly be missed — and as long as syndication exists, she will always be remembered.
