The Chattanooga fire department has confirmed that a school bus accident killed multiple people on Monday afternoon. 

The crash happened on the eastern side of the city and the fire department said that 23 total student were taken to local hospitals for treatment. As of Tuesday morning, officials have confirmed that five children were killed. 

As you can see in the picture, there was significant damage done to the bus as it ended up overturned against a tree.

Police have arrested the driver of the bus, Johnthony Walker, 24, and charged him with five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving.

The Tennessean reports that a neighborhood resident saw the bus hit a power line but no other specifics on the crash have been released.

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam released this statement:

"We've had a tragic event involving a school bus down in Hamilton County. We're going to do everything we can to assist in any way. It's a sad situation anytime there's a school bus with children involved, which there is in this case. We will do everything we can to assist in what I think is going to be a very sad situation."
