After prosecutors closed an alleged rape case against Nelly, the St. Louis rapper is fighting back -- legally.

According to Page Six, Nelly is pursuing legal action to clear his good name. “Nelly has suffered very real damage to his reputation,” said his lawyer, Scott Rosenblum, via a statement on Friday (Dec. 15). “He has incurred economic loss and painfully has watched his family suffer. As a result, Nelly is planning to proceed with litigation as the first step in restoring his reputation.”

As we previously reported, last October, Nelly was arrested for allegedly raping a woman on his tour bus in Washington state. However, prosecutors said they couldn't move forward with the case because the alleged victim refused to cooperate.

In a statement to the New York Times last October, the alleged victim’s attorney, Karen Koehler, explained why her client wanted to drop the criminal investigation. Koehler says the woman "wishes she had not called 911 because she believes the system is going to fail her."

"She wonders who is she to go by her small 'unimportant' self against a celebrity. Who will believe her. People are saying horrible things already," the statement reads. "She cannot handle this. She is about to break. She wants to close the door. She wants this to end. She just cannot bear it."

Nelly's lawyer said that while the rapper supports various women’s advocacy groups that deal with sexual assault, the allegation leveled against him “is an affront to the real survivors of sexual assault.”

“We were confident, that what our investigation revealed from the outset of this allegation would ultimately be clear and Nelly would be vindicated,” said Rosenblum in his statement.
