One person is dead and two dozen others hospitalized from overdoses on synthetic marijuana also known as ‘spice’.

Overdoses on the synthetic marijuana have spiked in Tuscaloosa County. The leaders of the areas public safety and law enforcement agencies held a press conference Thursday afternoon to make the public aware of what Tuscaloosa Chief of Police Steven Anderson called “a public health crisis and a public safety crisis.”

West Alabama Narcotics Task Force have made at least two major seizures of synthetic marijuana and found the drugs have been treated with rodenticides and insecticides.

DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa and Northport has treated 24 cases of ‘spice’ overdoses since March 28.
