I came across this clip this morning, and while it is quite funny, I also found it to be quite rude. Unfortunately, it appears to be taking place during a church service.

I'm all for excellence in ministry, and I understand how frustrating it can be for a soloist to be distracted by a musician. When it all boils down, the audience rarely questions the musician. They ask, "What key was SHE singing in?"  So, in that regard, I can totally feel her.  However, I think there was a better way to handle the situation, other than stating "the truth."

Other suitable reactions:

"I'm going to do this one acapella."

"Shhhh.... No music. Let's give God the gift of our voice." (For some reason, soloists always refer to themselves in plural.)

"Everybody, let's worship. Musicians included." Then, start singing, cut your eyes at the musician and give him the "cut throat" signal.

"Put me in the key of ____ and follow along."

Stop singing. Let the musician play what he wants. Worship a minute. Then say to the musician, "Here's one you may or may not not know. I'll start. Pick it up if you can. If not, it's ok."

I mean, we've all been in church services where either the musician wasn't formally trained and couldn't pick up the song or the soloist wasn't able to keep the key. Whatever the case, when the two elements don't mesh, it's a train wreck!

What do you think should have happened in this case? Do you think the way she addressed the issue was suitable, or could she have used a bit more tact?
