Student’s Racist Rap Songs Spark Investigation by Maryland School Board
Some racist rap songs discovered by students at a high school and middle school in Maryland have sparked outrage and an investigation by the Wicomico County Board of Education.
The songs in question were stumbled upon by students at Mardela Middle and High School on SoundCloud, reports WBOC.
The performer goes by the name Lil Plantation and the songs are titled "Whips Don't Hurt Them," "Whip Hands Free," and "All Slaves Are the Same." The latter is labeled as a Juice Wrld parody.
The lyrics are filled with racial slurs and references to slavery. "The whips won't hurt them. New niggers keep picking my crops, but the slaves can't touch me so I'm not worried," the person raps on "Whips Don't Hurt Them." "All alone, living on my own so I show no mercy, I show no mercy."
The students notified teachers and the issue ended up on the school board's table. They have launched an investigation into who could have posted the tracks, which they believe to be a student. The songs have since been removed.
Local author and activist Jaamad Gould expressed his frustration over the audacity of the unidentified performer.
"The fact that you're comfortable telling people to listen to something that you know is derogatory, that you know is offensive, that you know is something that you know you should not be saying," he told WBOC. "And you're laughing and joking about it that, to me, speaks on what his mind state is."
The Sheriff's Office will not get involved in the matter, which will be handled exclusively by the school board.
