Realizing the Dream Concert Tickets Now on Sale

South African musician Jonathan Butler will be the special guest for the 2016 Realizing the Dream Concert, and tickets go on sale today.

According to our daily, the concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 17, at the Moody Music Building Concert Hall on the UA campus and is part of the annual series of events celebrating the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Realizing the Dream is jointly sponsored by the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Shelton State Community College, Stillman College and UA.

Other associated events include a Legacy Banquet at the Embassy Suites on Jan. 15, where Birmingham attorney G. Douglas Jones, who led the team that prosecuted the cold case against two former Ku Klux Klansmen in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, will deliver a lecture. In addition, awards will be presented to former Alabama attorney general and lieutenant governor Bill Baxley, civil rights activist Theresa Burroughs, and University of Alabama S.G.A. President Elliot Spillers.

MLK weekend festivities will culminate with Unity Day activities on Jan. 18. This year's Unity Breakfast will be held at Beulah Missionary Baptist Church. Sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, it is befitting that SCLC Alabama President Rev. Schmitt Moore, pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, will be the speaker. The SCLC's Unity Day March from Foster Auditorium to Tuscaloosa City Hall will begin at noon, and the Mass Rally will be held at the First African Baptist Church at 5 p.m. Rev. Clarence Sutton Jr. and Rev. Tyshawn Gardner, pastor of Plum Grove Baptist Church and new President of the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the SCLC, will be the speakers for the march and rally, respectively.
