Saul Williams Headlines Tupac Shakur Musical ‘Holler If Ya Hear Me’
The 42-year-old 'Slam' actor will lead the cast but he is not playing the late rapper.
According to Billboard, the musical is based on Shakur’s music but is not about his life story.
Producers describe the musical as “a non-biographical story about friendship, family, revenge, change and hope." The production was written by Todd Kreidler and is directed by Kenny Leon, who earned praised for the current Broadway revival of 'Raisin in the Sun,' which stars Denzel Washington.
Among the players joining Williams are Tony Award-winning actor Tonya Pinkins, and veteran theater actors Christopher Jackson, Saycon Sengbloh, Ben Thompson and John Earl Jelks.
'Holler If Ya Hear Me,' which is being produced by 2Pac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, is being previewed on May 29 at New York's Palace Theatre and officially opens on June 19.
