Should Alabama Abolish the Death Penalty?

Just days after death row inmate Christopher Brooks was put to death, one Alabama lawmaker questions whether or not the state should consider abolishing the death penalty.

Alabama District 70 Representative Christopher England posed the question on his Facebook page, citing that it costs more to execute a person than to have a person live the remainder of his life in prison.  When questioned about how it costs less to keep someone “in jail for decades,” England responded that death penalty litigation costs more at every phase, beginning with a suspect being charged with a capital offense.

Some already feel like taking an offender’s life is just as wrong as the act that ended the life he may have taken. So, for them, it is a moral issue. But considering the fact that the state is already scraping to find ways to balance budgets, would abolishing the death penalty be a reasonable cost-effective solution?
