It's not even summer yet and the heat index is already over 100 degrees here in West Alabama on any given afternoon.  For those of you that work outside, let the kids play outside and the elderly, this is the time we need to pay close attention to be aware of heat injuries.

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water and remember, by the time you get really thirsty, you're probably already dehydrated.  Here are things to look for when you have a suspension that someone is suffering from a heat injury:

Heat cramp symptoms can include:

  • Severe, sometimes disabling, cramps that typically begin suddenly in the hands, calves, or feet
  • Hard, tense musclesHEAT EXHAUSTION  symptoms can include:Fatigue
  •  Nausea
  •  Headache
  • Excessive thirst
  • Muscle aches and cramps
  •  Confusion
  • Drenching sweats, often accompanied by cold, clammy skin
  • Slowed or weakened heartbeat
  •  Fainting
  •  Agitation
  •  Weakness
  •  Dizziness
  • Fatigue

HEAT STROKE SYMPTOMS can include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Hot, flushed dry skin
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Decreased to no sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Decreased urination
  • Blood in urine or stool
  • Increased body temp (104 degrees to 106 degrees F)
  • Confusion, delirium, or loss of consciousness
  • Convulsions
