Sometimes, living in Tuscaloosa, it's a easy to focus on all things "University," but we cannot forget our local HBCU, Stillman College.  It seems that the overall morale at the school has improved over the past few months, and excitement has returned.

For the first time ever, the Office of Student Activities at Stillman College will host the Alabama HBCU (Historically Black College and University) Summit.  The inaugural event will take place January 31 through February 2, 2014 and will bring student leaders from HBCUs throughout the state to Stillman’s campus, with the theam of "Connecting Leaders Through Communication and Service."

Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell, Representative Christopher England and Representative Pebblin Warren will serve as opening session speakers, and comedian Sheryl Underwood of The Talk on CBS will host the Ultimate Battle of the DJs and NPHC (National Panhellenic Councils) Step/Stroll Off during the Greek Row Carnival. Participants will network, share best practices about campus governance, and participate in the Alabama HBCU Gives Back Service Project to benefit Temporary Emergency Services. Highlights also include an Awards Gala.

"This is the first time that an event of this nature has been held in Alabama, and we are excited about providing Student Government Association (SGA) members, Nation Panhellenic Councils, student media, campus queens and other campus leaders with an opportunity to get together in a non-athletic setting," said Nancy Boyd, Director of Student Activities.

Stillman SGA President Rio Jackson added, "I am thrilled to be a part of this monumental event, which will bring students of different backgrounds together to learn from each other’s experiences. The Stillman College community welcomes our guests and is ecstatic that we have a opportunity to network and unite with students from campuses across the state."

This is a very exciting time for the students at Stillman College, alumni, and the community which has always supported the school, a community that the school has continuously served.
