The Tuscaloosa City Board of Education announces the death of James Minyard, a school board member serving District 1 of West Tuscaloosa.  He was 72.

Mr. Minyard was a native of Chicago and moved to Tuscaloosa at the age of two. He graduated in 1961 from Druid High School and then earned an Associate’s degree from Shelton State Community College (C. A. Fredd Campus) and his graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Alabama. He was the produce manager for Piggly Wiggly and an active member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. He is the father of five children, James II, Melonie, Michelle, Michael and Deidra.

Respected by his colleagues, Minyard's passing leaves a lasting impression upon other board members. "James loved the children of the City of Tuscaloosa and it was a joy to work with him on the school board," said Lee Garrison, board chair.  "His many years of service to the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education will never be forgotten and his family is in our thoughts and prayers.”

“Not only have we lost a knowledgeable board member, but I lost a friend,” said Tucker.  “I will truly miss him.”

The board is looking into the process of selecting a successor for Minyard.
