As a result of the Integrated Curriculum Facilities Demographic Strategic Plan which was passed by the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education in December 2015, Superintendent Dr. Paul McKendrick has introduced a policy for intradistrict school choice.

The draft policy, based on concepts proposed by the Board of Education, outlines the following concerns:

  • Student eligibility
  • Available Space Definition
  • Application Process
  • Selection Process
  • Transportation
  • Enrollment and Re-Application
  • Athletics
  • Non-discrimination statement

The selection process is said to rely entirely on a lottery for available space.

The draft, which has until now only been presented to the Board, is available on the system's website or in all school offices. As of now, it remains a draft which will be revisited for final adoption at a later time. Until that time comes, concerned citizens are encouraged to share comments, concerns and questions through the Let's Talk! Platform or via a feedback form from any school office.

The Intradistrict School Choice Policy is tentatively slated for adoption at the April 19 board meeting, which the public is invited to attend and provide input before the vote.
