It's easy to see the changes in Tuscaloosa City Schools, aside from zoning concerns.  From the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy to the Alberta School of Performing Arts, the system is moving forward to make area students competitive with students in other areas; and how, the system is introducing a new component: the Virtual Learning Program. The Virtual Learning Program essentially gives students the opportunity to take classes online and spend less time in the classroom.  In years past, students were "forced" to drop out of school so they could work and help provide for their families, and the classroom was not conducive to the learning style of some students.  The Virtual Learning Program would afford these students to obtain their high school diplomas, working at their own pace with non-traditional hours. In addition, athletes with rigorous training regimens might find it easier to take their classes using this program, and students who may never step foot in the classroom COULD be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities while enrolled in the Virtual Learning Program.

The Tuscaloosa City Schools system is looking for more students to participate in the program, which is totally free to students zoned for Tuscaloosa City Schools. They would like to have at least 10 students enrolled by next Wednesday.  More information on the Tuscaloosa City Schools' Virtual Learning Program is available here. In addition, this weekend's public affairs program (Pinto Beans and Collard Greens, Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. on 92.9 WTUG) will provide more information about the Virtual Learning Program.
