Our friends at The Arc are hosting a rally to discuss proposed critical funding cuts for the Department of Mental Health in Alabama on May 11th, 11 am-1 pm at Snow Hinton Park.

These cuts threaten the very existence of programs which have helped thousands for many years.

Proposed budget cuts will affect services provided by: The Arc of Tuscaloosa County, Indian Rivers Mental Health Center, Eagle’s Wings of Tuscaloosa, UCP of West Alabama, and Ability Alliance of West Alabama, as well as other day and residential service providers.

Persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses could lose vital treatment and/or services such as supervised homes, personal care, employment training and services at several Day Habilitation Centers.

Services which allow successful community living for persons with intellectual disabilities, serious mental illnesses, emotionally disturbed children and adolescents and people with substance abuse diagnoses could be impacted or eliminated by these cuts. The loss in services will place a burden on families, law-enforcement officials, hospitals, and the community at large.

The Arc of Tuscaloosa County is urging all concerned Tuscaloosa County citizens, legislators, and members of city and county government to attend the meeting.
