According to the Tuscaloosa News, the former sheriff’s deputy that killed his wife and her male companion before killing himself has been identified as Taylor Powell. His wife, Melanie, is said to have filed for divorce three days prior to the incident. The other victim has been identified as Ronald Hydrick.

Authorities in Sparks, Nevada are investigating a motive in a shooting where a middle school student opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun shortly before classes yesterday, wounding two 12-year-old boys, killing a teacher, and then taking his own life. The injured boys are said to be in stable condition.

Governor Bentley says he will continue a financial review of spending at Alabama State University, following preliminary findings from a forensic audit last week. Bentley is also brushing off criticism that he’s trying to run the institution.

Hurricane Raymond is approaching Mexico, threatening to spread heavy rains onto a region already devastated by last month’s Tropical Storm Manuel.
