At least 35 deaths have been reported from the storm system that moved through large parts of the Deep South and Midwest early in the week. Only three of those were in Alabama, including University of Alabama swimmer John Servati, who was taking shelter in the basement of a home when a retaining wall collapsed. Servati is remembered as an outstanding athlete and good person.

While a number of homes were damaged by winds, the biggest threats came from subsequent flooding.
