According to The Treatment Advocacy Center the incarceration rate for Americans with metal illnesses has reached a critical point. many inmates with mental illnesses receive no or inadequate mental health treatment during their incarceration, which causes their conditions to worsen.

There are more mentally ill people in Alabama's prisons than in the state hospitals, according to Tuscaloosa County Jail Chief Deputy Eric Bailey 30 percent of the jail population has some form of mental illness, those inmates are forced into general population
