‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Put on Hold After Tom Cruise Breaks His Ankle in Stunt

That Tom Cruise stunt gone wrong on the set of Mission: Impossible 6 looked pretty gnarly. And it was.

In a statement, Paramount Pictures confirmed that Cruise broke his ankle while performing a stunt. In the video which has circulated online, you can see Cruise leap off a scaffold to a nearby rooftop, only to come up a little bit short on the landing. (You can even see his body bounce a little bit on the point of impact.) Paramount says production of M:I6 “will go on hiatus while Tom makes a full recovery.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, production could be “delayed by eight to nine weeks due to the incident.”

A two-month stoppage leaves M:I 6 precious little time to finish the movie before its release on July 27 next summer. But director Christopher McQuarrie tweeted that the hiatus shouldn’t stop the film from opening on time.

McQuarrie told Empire that Cruise is “in very good spirits” despite the injury. The director also believed there could be a silver lining in the unfortunate accident. “This,” he explained, “gives us an opportunity to go into editorial and look at what we’ve shot and reassess the movie which is a luxury you don’t normally have because you’re on a train that just doesn’t stop.”

Well, the train is definitely stopped now. A Tom Cruise who can’t run is like a unicorn without its horn. (Technically, I guess that’s just the horse, but you get what I mean; it’s just not right.) We wish Cruise a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing Mission: Impossible 6 next summer. I hope the take with the injury makes the final cut. He broke his damn ankle for the film, it should at least be in the movie.
