The Tuscaloosa City Schools system takes pride in being run by a board with the students' best interest at heart. One of the system's board members was recently named a 2017 All-State Board Member.

The Alabama Association of School Boards Communities selected Marvin Lucas, District 6 school board member, as he is said to have been a consistent champion for making public schools work for all students.

Stated on the Tuscaloosa City Schools website,

Lucas began his advocacy work as a parent volunteer and local school PTA member who was willing to speak truth to power. He regularly attended school board meetings long before ever being inaugurated.

Lucas holds a demanding job at the local hospital which requires him to arrive at 4 a.m. daily. That has never stopped him from taking the necessary time to better understand the Tuscaloosa City Schools. This detail is key as he is the chair of the board's building and grounds committee.

The system is presently implementing a $175 million strategic plan which focuses on curriculum, human resources, and capital projects.

"Mr. Lucas' attention to crucial details of this building campaign has provided the requisite leadership to ensure that we are being good stewards of taxpayer resources," said Mike Daria, superintendent. Further, he has been willing to take hard votes when necessary to make sure we are building facilities to meet the needs of our students to prepare them for post-high school success. He demonstrates his commitment time and time again by championing opportunities for students be it in fine arts, athletics or workforce development."

The three-term board member is a visible presence and partner at schools throughout the City of Tuscaloosa. Principals know that Lucas is an invitation away from attending a school event regardless of location. It is because of his visibility among TCS teachers and parents that he is built a reputation for strong constituent relations.

Though public servants don't work for recognition, it's still nice to be honored. Congratulations, Mr. Lucas!
