According to the Tuscaloosa City Schools, the week of March 8 has been declared Alabama National Board Certified Teacher Week by Gov. Robert Bentley’s office.  In the Tuscaloosa City Schools, 52 teachers who have met the requirements to receive National Board Certification (NBC) will be recognized in various ways throughout the month.

A press release from TCS states:

NBC teachers were recognized when the Tuscaloosa City Council passed a resolution designating March 10 as National Board Certification Day.  The Tuscaloosa City Board of Education will honor NBC recipients with a resolution at a board meeting on March 10.  Other activities include videos posted on TCS social media sites and articles in The Tuscaloosa News and Druid City Living by NBC teachers, and a social gathering.

During the process of earning NBC, teachers must demonstrate that their teaching meets the profession’s standards for accomplished practice through a rigorous, peer-reviewed and performance-based process.  Some research shows that students taught by board-certified teachers learn more, particularly minority and low-income students.  NBC teachers receive an annual $5000 supplement from the Alabama State Department of Education.

Teachers in the school system who have achieved NBC are:  Georgette Eatmon, Alberta Elementary; Angela McClinton, Theresa Stewart, Nancy Stuckey, Judy Hajek, Arcadia Elementary; Laurie Coleman,  Brenadette Bruce, Central Elementary; Elois Byrd, Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary; Melissa Kent, Cynthia Smith, Oakdale Elementary; Alicia Jenne, Leanna McWilliams, Stephanie Powell, Denise Prowell, Rock Quarry Elementary; Deborah Conerly, Patricia Neighbors, Southview Elementary; Laura Bechtel, Kathryn Busby, Jeanne Burkhalter, Askia Little, Pressly Albritton, Rebecca Henry; Tuscaloosa Magnet Elementary; Petra Burroughs, Theresa Carden, University Place Elementary; Dr. Frances Fritz, Kathy Perkins, Mandy Wyatt, Verner Elementary; Robbie Beeler, Brenda Hilliker, Regina Sealy, Woodland Forrest Elementary; Melissa Mitchell, Ginger Nash, Oak Hill School; Heather Overstreet, Denise Perry, Eastwood Middle; Andrew Maxey, Karis Allen, Anna Daly, Jon Hall, Shelly Huver, Julie Ramsay, Mary Rasbury, Elizabeth Hancock, Minda Paxton, Rock Quarry Middle; Angie Morrison, University Place Middle; Karen Thomas, Westlawn Middle; David Truhett, Central High School; Beth Allaway, Victoria Evans, Susan Newell, Northridge High School; Dr. Dania Buchanan, Lisa Berger,  Special Populations; Jonathan Posey, Central Office.
