Every year, new scams emerge in which the intelligently lazy find ways to convince others to pass along sensitive information and money. The latest (which may just be a reemergence) is one involving jury duty.

According to AL.com, Cherokee County residents are reporting instances of receiving phone calls stating that they've failed to report to jury duty and must pay a fine. Others have been told that warrants for their arrests have been issued and payment for a fine must be paid.

Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver says his office does not ask for personal or financial information by phone or to clear warrants. Governmental operations usually notify by mail or if a call is made, a meeting in person is requested to rectify situations. Simply put, personal information, especially financial, should never be shared over the phone with governmental operations.
