Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox and Police Chief Steve Anderson are speaking out about the recent string of homicides in the city.Mayor Maddox and Chief Anderson held a press conference this morning about the matter, and posted the video above shortly afterward.

Tuscaloosa has seen four homicides in just six days, and Mayor Maddox said that "what has happened in the past few days had disturbed us all."

The city is taking several measures to address the problem.

Chief Anderson said, "We're increasing our visibility in District 7 where we've had a lot of these issues. We're putting more officers out there, and we're giving them specific assignments to target areas where we have high crime."

Anderson also said that three of the recent homicides have led to arrests; the fourth case is still an active investigation.

Mayor Maddox said the city is calling upon its faith-based and social service agencies, and institutions of public and secondary education to get more involved in an effort to reach every child in the community.

"The city does not have the power to change hearts and minds," Maddox said.
