If you have a led foot, you might want to ease off the gas pedal this week, because "Operation Southern Shield" has officially begun.

According to law enforcement, the main objective of the program is to encourage motorists to slow down.

Alabama and four other states, (Florida, Georgia, Tennessee & South Carolina),  are participating in the program, which runs through next Sunday, (July 22). Officers in these states will be pulling over drivers who are traveling above the posted speed limits.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that speeding killed more than 10,000 people in the United States in 2016, and was a factor in 27 percent of fatal crashes in the nation.

So, if you get stopped, it's on YOU, because you've officially been warned. In addition, make sure you're wearing your seat belt, because if you get pulled over and you're not wearing yours, it WILL result in additional violations and penalties.
