What is Black Music Month? The month long observance was first declared in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter, with the encouragement of legendary songwriter-producer Kenny Gamble to honor the contributions of pioneers such as Chuck Berry, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone and countless others who helped shape the American musical landscape.

And what went on today June 13th in Black Music Month?

In 1969, the largest soul music festival 'The Soul Bowl' was held at the Houston Astrodome, featuring Percy Sledge, Sam & Dave, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, the Staple Singers, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson and many more.

In 1987, 'Rock Steady' by the Whispers was Number 1.

In 1992, Luther Vandross and Janet Jackson's 'Best Things in Life are Free' peaked at #10

In 2005, Destiny's Child announced they were breaking up.
