As the days grow shorter and colder, we know winter is approaching.  We've had a blast of chill for Halloween, and now another arctic blast this week.  But, when should we expect our coldest day of the year?

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has released a map detailing the national coldest temperature averages.  The information is compiled using climate data from 1981 through 2010.

At first glance of the map, the country is divided.  The western part of the country tends to have its biggest chill in December.  Whereas, it happens in January for the eastern half of the country.

In Alabama there is a split between the northern and southern half of the state.  The northern hits its coldest point the week of January 16th.  The southern during the week of the 11th.  So, take those two weeks and on average the coldest day of the year in Alabama is January 16th.

Now, it's only November and we have another cold burst pushing through the state.  By the end of the week, the daytime high will only be in the 40s, the nighttime low will drop past the freezing mark and down into the 20s!

What's going on here?  Well, it's looking more and more like the "cold" winter prediction made weeks ago is on the money.
