This is my opinion and my opinion alone. Southern Soul Music, sometimes referred to as the blues, and gospel music in my opinion are the purest forms of Black or Soul Music you will hear today.

When you listen to the pioneers and the soldiers of black music you hear what’s referred to today as Southern Soul or the Blues. That’s because that’s what it is, soul music from the south.

When you look back at the pioneers and soldiers of southern soul or the blues the majority of them are from the south? If you tried to comprise a list of all the architects of black music from the south you will be working for days.

There is no question that gospel music is the main influence of soul music. The southern soul sound goes all the way back to the Memphis sound, the Muscle Shoals Sound and the New Orleans sound.

Stax Records, Gold Wax, and Hi Records of Memphis and Jewel Records of Louisiana were the leading soul music labels they had such artist as John Lee Hooker, Charles Brown, Lightin’ Hopkins, Little Johnny Taylor, Booker T. & the MGs, Otis Redding, Little Richard, The Staple Singers, Sam & Dave and Wilson Pickett, if you listen to these artist what you will here is Southern Soul. They are all from the south or worked with writers and producers from the south
