According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Najee Harris was present at a Fourth of July celebration when a fireworks mishap happened, resulting in several people suffering injuries, including Harris. Harris suffered a "superficial" eye injury during the incident. Harris's agent told Schefter that Harris is expected to be fully healthy for the start of the Chargers' season on September 5.

Harris signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Chargers during NFL free agency in March. He joined Bradley Bozeman, Justin Eboigbe, Da'Shawn Hand, and JK Scott as former Alabama players on the Los Angeles Chargers roster.

Harris previously spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being drafted in the first round out of the University of Alabama. During his time with the Steelers, Harris rushed for 1,000 yards every season, totaling 4,312 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns during his first four years in the NFL. Harris also caught 180 passes for 1,149 yards and six receiving touchdowns.

Harris was a two-time national champion at Alabama, spending four years in Tuscaloosa. He won the national championship in 2017 and 2020, totaling 3,843 rushing yards and 46 rushing touchdowns, while also catching 80 passes for 781 yards and 11 touchdowns. Harris placed fifth in the Heisman Trophy race in 2020 while also being named a consensus All-American and winning the Doak Walker Award.
